Begin with the photographs, not the price list

A wedding photographer’s portfolio should show more than a few dramatic portraits. Look for complete storytelling: preparation, family relationships, ceremony moments, candid reactions, portraits, reception lighting, and the small details that make each celebration distinct.

Choose a style you genuinely love

Editing trends change, but your photographs will remain. Make sure you consistently enjoy the photographer’s color, skin tones, use of light, and approach to posing—not just one favorite image.

Pay attention to how the experience feels

Your photographer will be beside you during some of the most emotional and time-sensitive parts of the day. Look for someone who communicates clearly, offers calm direction, respects your people, and can keep moving when plans change.

Compare complete coverage

Ask how many hours are included, whether a second photographer is available, what travel costs apply, how images are delivered, and what happens if you need additional coverage. Compare the complete experience rather than the starting price alone.

Review the contract and backup plan

A professional agreement should clearly explain payments, cancellation and rescheduling, delivery timing, image usage, and responsibilities. Ask about backup equipment, image storage, and the photographer’s emergency plan.

Understand delivery expectations

Wedding galleries require careful culling and editing. My usual wedding delivery window is 8 to 12 weeks. Confirm the estimated timeline and how long your online gallery will remain available, then download and back up your files promptly.

Make the final decision with confidence

Choose the photographer whose work, communication, and process make you feel understood. Beautiful photographs matter, but so does having a steady professional who protects the experience around them.
